If you think that people who vote for the political figure you disagree with must necessarily be psychopaths, complete buffoons, idiots, brainwashed, whiny, or angrily selfish, then you should seriously reconsider like, all of your beliefs in everything

Because you're ascribing *morality* to your beliefs; you're focusing on the depravity of the opposition and the holiness of your own tribe. In principle, you're no better than the religious, those who go to war, and those who justified slavery

Whenever I meet someone who categorizes those they disagree with as motivated by darkness, I immediately become afraid of them, because I know their love has concrete limits, and if I want to connect with them I have to perform within their approved limits or be rejected.

this is a self defeating thread of logic because it necessarily says you yourself have had your compassion destroyed, because you're ascribing that morality to people who believe in something different to you

No; I'm saying that people who are failing to be compassionate are falling into the same trap as the people they hate. I'm calling them hypocritical; I'm not accusing them of being psychopathic, wimpy, or depraved.

I'd bet you a ton of money that if you directly asked someone who you oppose politically, "do you want kids to be in cages", they would say absolutely not

Brainwashed is different from the other perceptions you noted. That's not moral judgment there. Condescending? Perhaps. But people do sometimes literally drink the kool-aid.

I absolutely don't mean we can't critique other people. We can say "I think what you want is actually misguided and will hurt a lot of people." But saying "You are a psychopath because you support that policy" is not in the same category of critique.
