Whenever I meet someone who categorizes those they disagree with as motivated by darkness, I immediately become afraid of them, because I know their love has concrete limits, and if I want to connect with them I have to perform within their approved limits or be rejected.

I can empathize with how someone ended up in a place to want to hurt people to feel better. But I’ll still work to stop them and reveal the actual effects of what they support rather than what they think is happening. I don’t think they are evil, just wrong. The politicians tho..

And unfortunately deep empathy needed to understand ppl that have attitudes scary to us is a limited resource. Can happen interpersonally for sure, but not so sure can happen in general. Politics can be played without demonization, but haven’t seen it done on large scales.

I had this exact argument with a friend the other day, she was convinced everyone who voted x knew they were doing evil - no, they're convinced they're doing good. The few people in life who 'know' they're doing wrong think it's not they're fault
