No way to really know, but presumably the human preference for attractive/symmetric features has been sexually selected for and gradually honed us all into friggin hotties. Though, think about the rise of fake tan, ultra-skinny compared with older art. Ideals of beauty change.

People are more attractive now than they were in the 90s, like there's no question about this. nutritional understanding and beauty products are more advanced than they've ever been.

I think it is more, particularly in the last 60 years or so. Since the 1960s women have had more agency in selecting partners. This agency and the fact that attractive people tend to date attractive mates leads to an increase in attractive people. At least that's my theory!
