Twitter has been slowly corrupting my tweets. I like getting followers and notifications; reliably, tweets that are less nuanced and more aggressive get more followers and notifications, which increases my desire to be less nuanced and more aggressive. I feel kinda gross.

I get a very large amount of responses on twitter and can't realistically respond to all; I do still respond to nuanced and reasonable arguments!

This is life under the tyranny of the algorithm. Exploiting flaws in human psychology to optimize for engagement and profit at the expense of happiness, but mostly invisible and scaled globally. The demand for ethical design needs to become a much bigger issue.

Twitter has pushed me in the opposite direction, rewarding me for long, convoluted tweetstorms about very niche topics in software. It's... actually kinda nice?

It's quite a bit like tuning a node in an artificial neural network, is it not?
Now imagine everyone else is also a node. And also being tuned.

in my experience + opinion, the way out of this is to have a vision for yourself about who you want to be, and who you want to associate with. who do you want at your 80th birthday party? focus on writing for those people
