I think the thing other people are parsing as 'gender' isn't 'gender' to me. I talked with a nonbinary friend recently who described their nonbinaryness as sort of... not wanting to be misunderstood as having female traits. This is valid! This also is completely different from-
Ooh I think so. So it would be, traditional gender (what you read as) is your gender identity, and your gender expression is if you tell people you're nonbinary?

Not quite, I'd say gender identity is how you read yourself while gender expression is how you try to be read by others by playing the gender game, (clothes, makeup, etc). Even if you don't change your gender expression, you could disclose your gender identity to others...
