For most people, gender is like nationality: seemingly natural, rarely questioned as to its contingent nature, and only on close examination or when considering changing it does it seem shaky or arbitrary.

Along these lines, the theory would treat all forms of identity as trauma, and the more constructed/advanced, the more traumatizing.
