My wife was taking about this today. Basically, she said that a child's life is all trauma. Everything is an assault that must be dealt with, almost entirely, emotionally. Particularly in the earliest years. The first years of life are so learning to deal with trauma.

This fails as an analysis of "trauma" because it makes trauma no longer something that must be bad. Unless the ideal person would be an uncarved block of potential, with no realized features.

For most people, gender is like nationality: seemingly natural, rarely questioned as to its contingent nature, and only on close examination or when considering changing it does it seem shaky or arbitrary.
