The idea that trans women are at greater risk of sexual assault is a little weird to me. If they're visibly trans, wouldn't this be a deterrent, as males tend to have lower rates of sexual assault than females? I'd imagine a transphobic asshole preferring non-sexual assault.

Except that rape isn’t about attraction - nor attractivity, but vulnerability. And also, men never facing much consequences. Trans people are way more vulnerable (precarity, sex work, ostracisation, transphobia,...), hence, targeted.

younger women (and especially KIDS) are the most vulnerable.

For a specific meaning of attraction, yes. Both forms of violence are sexualized violence. Both seem to be motivated by reaction (avoiding the word 'gaze') to what the male experiences as a provocation.
