The idea that trans women are at greater risk of sexual assault is a little weird to me. If they're visibly trans, wouldn't this be a deterrent, as males tend to have lower rates of sexual assault than females? I'd imagine a transphobic asshole preferring non-sexual assault.

Except that rape isn’t about attraction - nor attractivity, but vulnerability. And also, men never facing much consequences.
Trans people are way more vulnerable (precarity, sex work, ostracisation, transphobia,...), hence, targeted.

But... It kind of is? Younger women are raped much more than older, for example.

for which one? that trans women are at higher risks of sexual assault? No - I was just repeating what a lot of trans people say. I can look though!

I think that the reason is that people who sexually assault people usually dont have great logical skills.

Excellent point, and if nonvisible then no difference.
I haven't looked into it but my immediate thought about the trans woman risk claims is that it is very likely based on small sample size since a large sample doesn't exist.

I don't know of any studies off hand, but one obvious hypothetical would be that some fragile guys might get angry/violent when finding out that a girl they found attractive is trans and feel like they have to prove their manliness (and that they're totally NOT still attracted).

It's no weirder than the fact of women instigating domestic violence just as often as men do, despite that women take the most physical damage from such an endeavor, sex differences being what they are. Doesn't make any sense, yet there it is.
