Often new, spicy, or big things are tried specifically when a relationship is dying, and so those spicy things get a reputation for killing a relationship (when really they only hastened an approaching demise). Polyamory, children, threesomes, sometimes weddings fall into this!

I think this is true, but the correlation is still Bayesian evidence if you're in the relationship. A partner that suggests children when things are going poorly is further evidence that it might not be salvageable.
