The popularity of astrology is one of the few things that makes me feel really despondent about current culture. It seems such low hanging fruit for even a basic amount of self-skepticism. Can any astrology supporters explain why they believe it?

I suppose my first question is how familiar you are with astrology. But to answer your question, I liken it to a far looser form of study in the same vein as sociology; mostly correlative. I wouldn't be any more despondent about it than you would be with people being Christian.

There was one interesting and controversial study done in 1955 that correlated athletic prowess to significant positioning of Mars, which would be the most closely affiliated planet to such things. Similar data-driven efforts have been started in recent years thanks to tech.
