The idea that there is a 'correct/natural/ideal' way to do something, usually based on historic trends, is a pretty pervasive fallacy
I don't think the 'child rearing pair' as you're thinking of it has been really that common throughout history. Polygamy, 'tribal' families, cultures with uncertain parenthood, communal living, single mothers, etc. - have all been the norm at different times
