I don't think this is a bad article, it basically sums up the issue of how difficult it is to track these things. There are so many things that decrease accurate reporting of these crimes, and very few that increase it.

This paper: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5551619/ … says some sources just ask "male, female, or transgender" which I'd expect many trans people say m or f to. If such violence is at the hands of people who feel "tricked", we might expect trans ppl who just reply m or f to be at higher risk.
