i go with A. i have friends who like to cross dress, but identify as male while not. dude just goes with the flow, and i think thats a pretty solid definition of non binary.

More complicated than this. You say cross dress, meaning I assume crossing gender boundaries as is typical for the phrase. What is "women" dress? I mean I do know. I'm just saying women clothing isn't a fact, we made it up. Dressing doesn't alter a gender.

I chose C as it was closest, but I feel the explanation is neither trauma or illness in many cases. Rather, many of these people have trouble with self esteem and gaining status among peers and become susceptible to philosophy that gives them a chance to heighten their status.

You could try asking them and listening, rather than relying on uninformed "gut intuitive process"...

That’s not the purpose of this poll.

True, A and C seem only partial explanations. I think mild "gender issues" / dysphoria are real. Not feeling satisfied or honest with a claim to natal or opposite gender. (There are some who claim NB purely for politics. I doubt it's a majority.)

Anecdotally it seems that females are more likely to identify as nonbinary. Which makes sense considering they’re the ones most at risk of being traumatized by society treating them as girls/women (i.e. poorly). The nb designation seems like an attempt to “opt-out” of womanhood.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Option A presented more in males and Option C presented more in females.

Not mental illness necessarily, just that they are dissatisfied with their life/identity and want to feel special
-
Weird take. I am deeply dissatisfied with my life and identity and would love to feel special, but I'm not at all NB. Perfectly cool with being a cis femme and actively dislike feeling or being seen as masc. Your suspicion is not a thing I have ever encountered.
