"I do makeup for me, as expression, not for anyone else" is the biggest load of crock I've ever heard. Isn't it a little weird that everyone who does makeup 'for themselves' always aims for the same goal - making eyes look bigger, skin more youthful, lips fuller?

I see! It's definitely hard to separe those things. What would you think about someone saying, like, "I play guitar to express myself, not for other people", even though they play pretty, pop-y sounding tunes that most people find pleasant? Is it the same kinda thing for you?

this is a super sound point and seems to apply to any art (and probably a lot of other things) that isn't strictly for personal consumption

I put on makeup even if I know I'm going to stay at home and no one will see me but myself. I think it's hard to separate looking at yourself and being pleased with what you see from, at the same time, imagining others seeing you and how they would react

I think this is true in a lot of psychological situations that are on the face of it totally private &therefore you might think shouldn't be influenced by social considerations. IME one is still constantly modelling the reactions of hypothetical observers; it makes a lot of sense

Okay? You're free to think they're deluded but like clearly that person isn't necessarily being insincere
