"I do makeup for me, as expression, not for anyone else" is the biggest load of crock I've ever heard. Isn't it a little weird that everyone who does makeup 'for themselves' always aims for the same goal - making eyes look bigger, skin more youthful, lips fuller?

Isn't this not much different from the fact that artists tend to try to paint things that are aesthetically pleasing? Self expression doesn't mean you aren't influenced by instinctual and cultural norms

Sure - I guess my issue is slightly less with expression (I concede that choosing an eyeshadow color counts as expression) and more with the insistence that the motivation for this does not come from other people.

Fair. I can imagine at least 1. motivated by others (I wouldn't do it if no one ever saw me) + ideas of beauty influenced by others 2. motivated by self (I _would_ do it if no one ever saw me) + ideas of beauty influenced by others how many people fall into 1 vs 2, though...
