"I do makeup for me, as expression, not for anyone else" is the biggest load of crock I've ever heard. Isn't it a little weird that everyone who does makeup 'for themselves' always aims for the same goal - making eyes look bigger, skin more youthful, lips fuller?

i dunno, isn't there work showing that some beauty standards are "inborn"? anyway, i can fathom wanting to look pretty "for myself" while acknowledging that my view of "pretty" is shaped by others' attitudes.

Ancestral patterns ARE shared through DNA from parents, that's why you can have traits of Aunt Glenda but have never met her because she passed away before you were born. Makeup is the art of shapeshifting imo & was one of the skills required for women in India to marry long ago.

I think it’s possible a person can want to “be pretty” for their own satisfaction, not to please others, despite the fact that their own idea of “pretty” is to a certain extent conditioned by society. The goal would be “I meet *my* ideal” even though it is part social construct.
