"I do makeup for me, as expression, not for anyone else" is the biggest load of crock I've ever heard. Isn't it a little weird that everyone who does makeup 'for themselves' always aims for the same goal - making eyes look bigger, skin more youthful, lips fuller?

how about "i want to like the way i look in the mirror"?

I still can't comprehend this independent of society. What determines if you like or don't like yourself in the mirror? Fuckin other people man. If you were a wolf child raised after the apocalypse you think you'd be like 'hmm my hips are a lil fat'

is it wrong to have a bunch of hypothetical people in your head saying nice things about how you look?

It may start out as signaling but take on a life of its own with time. Your brain becomes habituated to looking a certain way and if you fall short of that, it causes discomfort.

I think the crock is suggesting the motivation is either this or that - a dichotomy. Like you said, it's a joint perception, but it's also a process of internalisation and individuation. It's about motivational aspects: for myself, given past and expected experience w/ others.

I always took that to mean looking pretty for the sake of some people and not others. But admitting to discriminating is a big no no.
