ok yes but sometimes you use pinkish purple shades instead of pinkish red ones and last thursday you even did a cut crease so now this is definite proof you're not doing this 'for anyone else'

Yes but *why* do you like the look? I like the look of my face when I wear makeup but if I look a little deeper it becomes obvious that I like it because I know it changes other people's responses to me in the way I want.

I can't comprehend that, I don't even know what that would mean. The idea of 'pretty' requires a joint perception between the person viewing and the person being viewed.

I think some body builders start off with vain purposes, but that leads to an obsession/hobby they do for themselves. Would imagine make up might work the same way, maybe.

Isn't this not much different from the fact that artists tend to try to paint things that are aesthetically pleasing? Self expression doesn't mean you aren't influenced by instinctual and cultural norms

Sure - I guess my issue is slightly less with expression (I concede that choosing an eyeshadow color counts as expression) and more with the insistence that the motivation for this does not come from other people.
