But being pro really good things doesn't mean you're immune from falling into tribalistic, ingroup, thought-suppressing norms. Maybe it makes you more likely to do so, because you have "doing good" to justify your actions.

No I agree, but again that's painting with a broad stroke brush. There are a lot of (I'd even argue most) people in those religious communities that choose not to take the holier than thou approach. It's a problem, but I think those people are over represented.

I think in most religious communities actually this has sort of died out, mostly because religion has been around for a very long time and figured out that being very aggressive about things isn't sustainable. I expect the same to happen in SJW communities given enough time.
