I'm confused by this. Nearly everybody on the street I see, walks straight by homeless people like they don't exist, and it's a common trope that people ask each other how they are but don't actually want to know. I'm not like... making some crazy claim here.

Also, to reiterate, in my article I clearly advocate using people's preferred pronouns, that this is a kind thing to do and we should be kind. I personally use everyone's pronouns that they ask me to without questioning them or pushing back at all.

You're talking about actively perpetuating these behaviors. You say, with "we," that you don't make the effort to care about the people you talk to and you ignore homeless people on the street. And you assume the rest of us are "playing pretend" when we accept people's pronouns.
