People were contacting my business partner about my supposed "transphobia". I've suddenly felt grateful that I've been so self-made, with nobody in power over me, otherwise people in power over me would get contacted and then I might feel actually afraid.

This also emphasizes how much the market determines how free your speech can be; if speech isn't accepted, then the market will punish the markets you're associated with (complaining to your company, getting you fired). This punishment can be used for good things or bad things.

But regardless, I feel privileged to have particularly free speech, in that there's little anybody can do to hurt me through social punishment.

That risk of social punishment is part of why I stay pseudonymous. I have other dealings in an industry where social punishment's effectiveness is amplified-- it costs nothing to do great damage. Is this the worst it's been for you, someone tattling on your biz partner?

With enough time, they can turn you into a pariah. For many, that’s far more painful than financial loss.
