No, invalidate the fact there are social incentives. It's possible they were deluded about how easy it would be, but that doesn't negate the fact they cite social incentives.
I think I'm interpreting perceived social incentive as actual social incentive, but everything else (their own trauma) kinda fucked it up.

They do explicitly say "ideals", which is the sort of thing I'm referring to. For example, the "ideal" body shape in advertising is unrealistic, but people still try to get to it.
