I absolutely think a lot (most? nearly all?) trans people are trans because of default brain wiring or something, but I wonder what percentage are MtF cause they felt like they could never be a successful man, and because there's a clear community/path to acceptance for trans ppl

Not that trans people have automatic community, especially in certain areas of the world, but that there is some visible and clear narrative around being a successful, accepted trans person that might appear to be more easily achievable than being a successful man, for some.

In some cases, I think this is a possibility yes. This would have to be cases where there's no clear reward to being a man (espec. sexually), where they feel very little sympathy for their gendered difficulties, and wants to feel community and pride and sympathy for who they are.

Isn't this the case for kathoey in thailand? From my limited knowledge, homosexuality is seen as very bad and so kathoey are treated better than homosexual men.

Yes this is absolutely the case. The gradient has bowed the other way. Similarly, modern feminism is where it is in large part because, ironically, people are hardwired to care about women's plight. The oppression of women narrative is possible because women are championed.
