I absolutely think a lot (most? nearly all?) trans people are trans because of default brain wiring or something, but I wonder what percentage are MtF cause they felt like they could never be a successful man, and because there's a clear community/path to acceptance for trans ppl

*especially* when it comes to men with more feminine interests, in more traditional communities where they might get derided for it.

The idea of a "successful man" is at least rather well-defined; "being accepted, as a man" OTOH, feels to me like an entirely foreign if not outright impossible concept.

I don't believe anyone who isn't trans would be able to transition. There are even trans people who face so many obstacles that they go back into the closet.

There's a lot of successful masculinities, and most men have a plethora of narratives to choose from - this shows up in research on their responses to objectification for example. You're behind the times here, thinking in terms of unitary masculinity instead of "masculinities".
-
I'm curious about this, does research show men tend to be able to adopt a variety of narratives to justify their idea of themselves as leading successful lives? That wouldn't really surprise me as a man, I find most every guy I've ever met justifies himself as a winner somehow.

for cis men, being accepted as successful requires literally absolutely nothing. the bar is below the ground.
-
As a cis man, I'm inclined to agree -- there is an idea that cis men have pressure on them to be rich, handsome, and successful if they ever want love and acceptance from anyone, but in practice a lot of lenience is shown and just a decent effort will usually be enough for that.
