Some women at a women's shelter, having been deeply traumatized by men, are uncomfortable around trans women. Would you support the shelter making a subsection for these women that excludes trans women?

*Private* rooms/areas, rather than validating some "people with trait X make me uncomfortable" dispreferences as valid/legitimate and not others Some people might have been traumatized by "people who wear hats" but I'm not gonna make whole "no hat" sections as a result...

I'm not necessarily disagreeing, but wondering how you feel about the existence of women's shelters themselves, which are drawing a "private" area away from men - do you feel shelters should be nongendered?

honestly I feel I would need a better understanding of how shelters model their programs to serve their populations I don't currently support men's / women's *bathrooms*, I support "many stalls, room of sinks, anyone" or "single-occupacy" bathrooms but as for shelters [...]

it seems conceivable that a more sound justification comes pragmatically from "we serve population X" than from "we exclude population Y" and that "women's shelters" and "men's shelters" and "LGBT shelters" and "people with families and pets shelters" all make sense from that

Would you be down with "cis women's shelters" then?

gonna go back to "I would need a better understanding of how shelters model their programs" it seems crazy/implausible to me that this would be a coherent way to serve a population, and the social cost is high but if someone *who works in this area* gave me reasons, I'd listen?

Yeah that's fair. I don't think I have very strong opinions on this myself, but without additional information I assume the two stable perspectives are "There should be no divisions in accessibility based on gender/race/class/etc.", and "there should be any divisions people want"

Totally, I think there's something right about that. My own stance is an elaboration: "Divisions in accessibility are socially costly. They can make sense if there's an extremely compelling pragmatic reason, but it has to overcome the social cost"
