Generally, I don't resonate with identity in media - race/sex doesn't matter as long as it's a good story. But I did feel this for the first time watching Wonder Woman. The movie wasn't even all that great but I felt weird secondhand pride cause the protagonist was female.

I completely did not expect that the movie would make me feel the part of my character that's 'woman' shaped so strongly, and also made me feel for the first time the lack of that shape in that particular main role in other scifi/fantasy media.

It might be one of the first big-name films that highlighted the protagonists' femininity without it falling into a zero-sum game of "woman good/man bad". There have been some positively badass female protagonists out there but their womanliness wasn't part of the movie's theme.

Maybe so? I'm a bit confused why I didn't get the 'woman pride' thing from other female-led movies. It's possible that it's just the superhero genre, which has been very male dominated. Other media that made me feel 'woman pride' has been Firefly and Star Trek Voyager and DS9.

Maybe because it's not just a female lead character but she also happens to be a super who actually uses strength-appropriate martial arts in a universe full of "just throw punches at other supers because who needs skill" type supers?

She's probably... kinda enjoyable to project yourself into? Not quite *too* perfect, but a likable person who still has a spine, showing that both are possible at once.

Is it normal / natural / OK for any other identity to feel this way about their respective representation, or only certain ones?

Hrmmm... Really? What about Underworld? Hunger Games? G. I. Jane? Alien, Aliens, Alien 3? Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon? Kill Bill? Resident Evil? Fifth Element? Edge of Tomorrow? T2: Judgement Day? Lucy? Wanted? Gone in 60 Seconds? Tomb Raider? Planet Terror?

As I said in another tweet, it might be the superhero genre specifically, which has had very few women-led ones. I definitely agree there's lots of female action heroes overall.
