I'd see this as the collective memory and experience of up to five decades worth of society, vs the collective potential of one year of society. Cold but simple.

Killing the 55+s certainly creates a Great Depression+ level crash and quite possibly causes society to collapse wholesale. Babies gotta go sadly.

Given that I have blood on my hands in both situations, neither option is morally superior than the other. The choice is then based on pure pragmatism; if all 55+ year olds die instantly, society experiences far greater damage than if 1 year old babies die.
