I have a friend who yells MONOPLOT whenever we're watching a movie in which the characters get into zany situations because of monogamy. It's caught on and now we all groan MONOPLOT together whenever the conflict would be immediately resolved with just a little polyamory.

Would make for a pretty dull movie too though.

Is there a version of this where you can solve the problem by lying or murder?

Is polyamory compatible with civilization? Won't it lead to the same problem as polygyny, that is that unattractive men won't give a damn and might be more criminal?

Polyamory is not currently very widespread and it's an open question as to whether it will ever be. A poly civilization could theoretically work well if one makes a lot of optimistic assumptions about the traits and behaviour of the people. In reality? Who knows.

We used to call these things MONOPROBLES. The funny thing is that most of these problems don't even require 'fully fledged' polygamy/polyamory but just a tiny bit of understanding and openness.

This feels a little like "Why does John Wick not just get a new puppy to replace his old one?" or "This romcom would be so much simpler if he was just gay and into his best friend". That "just" is doing a lot of work there.

There was a great episode of a hilarious UK show called "Coupling" where one of the characters is explaining how he swallowed his gf's ring, and he makes this huge leap in the story and tries to cover it with "in the course of events". It's like, that can only cover *so* much ;-)

Wow conflict resulting from breaking social conventions can be solved by having the characters adhere to different social conventions? What an insight!

We're basically violent territorial monkeys. It's ingrained in our genes to keep "what's ours" and not share. This is why we have wealth disparity and monoganous relationships. I myself couldn't accept if the person I love goes and has sex with someone else

"Love may be infinite but time isnt" is something I've heard in many poly communities. Also, not sure about your movies, but monogamous folks opening a relationship to "save" it can end rather poorly. People can and do make it work, communication & introspection is the hard part
