I was watching All About Eve (1950), and there was an actress with a small part, few lines, and gorgeous face who I couldn't stop staring at whenever she was on screen. I looked her up afterwards and lo and behold it was then-unknown actress Marilyn fucking Monroe. I get it now.

Seems equally likely that you couldn't stop staring at her because you have had so much exposure to her face in popular culture (i.e. subconscious recognition) rather than any inherent magnetism

Possible! I definitely did not consciously recognize her if that was the case - she looked a lot younger.
