That accusation is, I believe, part of a shaming tactic against homophobes (the mere term "phobia" in "homophobia"is, also). Those shaming tactics might have been useful (short term) some years ago, but I think that nowadays they open the door to all sorts of contradictions.

I would assume we don’t really believe they are in the closet, but that rather the attempt is to cast doubt on the sincerity of their homophobia by asking what their interest is, suggesting that it’s unhealthy or “don’t worry about my problems, worry about your own.” Retort

It is the supposed hypocrisy that people are criticising. In US politics at least there have been many cases of high profile opponents of LGBT rights who have been caught having same sex encounters or come out. The hypocrisy of these (mostly) men has made others suspect.

A friend years ago told me his brother became very religious after realizing he was gay, despite living in an area that wasn’t harsh on LGBT people. It seemed to me and him, that this was something he innately disliked about himself rather than worrying about societal judgment.

Even if they were correct, wouldn't it be actually commendable that one would feel so strongly about a belief that they would deny what proponents believe is such a fundamental aspect of being?
