There's movement of connotation in language - if you spit with the word 'fag' often enough, it starts to become a slur; if the word 'retard' is mostly used in jokes, then it becomes offensive. Prostitute seems not immune to this effect.

That being said, I don't think there's a good substitute for the word 'prostitute' right now. "Sex worker" and "escort" is too vague, and you get people going "wait what do you mean, like... you have sex?" when it's brought up in conversation. I personally am pro-"prostitute".
