So I would expect the results to be roughly the same: what the academics lack in practical knowledge they make up in theory, and the inverse goes for non academics... (assuming of course, the usual stereotypes for "academics" and "non-academics" which I doubt a little)

I'd be inclined to agree initially. But since she said the non-academics are both intelligent and well-read, I'm inclined to think many of them are familiar with a decent amount of the theory too, along with more practical knowledge
