sexist: women use guns less in suicide because they're worried their corpse won't be attractive not sexist: women avoiding guns in suicide is further evidence of how pervasive and mighty the grip of social pressures on women's appearances. (cont...)

Tbh, suicide would probably be the only occasion when I _wouldn't_ care how I looked On a serious note, the 'social pressure' type of narrative seems almost insulting because it's like -- has no one actually considered that women like to look a certain way just for themselves?

I've considered it but find it extremely implausible. Like, if you just delete society from a human's brain you get something unrecognizeable, not a woman who likes wearing blue lipstick 'just for herself.' Everything we signal about ourselves is tied to 'being viewed.'

Do you mean if you delete society from this point onwards, or as if it never existed?

both, to different extents. I suspect if you delete society from here on out, we'll have residual effects from the way we want to look, but it'll change a lot over time. If you had a 'wild child raised in woods' then yeah probably wouldn't want to look any particular way.

I mean, in evolutionary sense, I guess you're right. But if I were the only person in the middle of nowhere *and* had memories of how things "used to be", I'd still want to put my make up on because it would make me feel good / elevate my mood / etc.

no it's not a stupid thought experiment? To some extent society got 'deleted' for Genie (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genie_(feral_child) …), and we got to see a lot of what happens to a brain when it's deprived of social interaction during development.
