I had a consultation for plastic surgery today! I think I carry a lil social shame from 'caring so much about my appearance.' I'm not sure I actually mind my appearance so much as it feels incredibly advantageous to be more attractive, particularly if I'm public-facing.

How would you explain it to your daughter? Would you encourage you to do the same? And what do you say to her when she asks why her brother doesn't need to do the same to be in a public-facing position? Is that just the way the world is and that's okay?

idk, if she wanted to do it then I don't see a problem with it? And her brother also would probably do better if he got plastic surgery too. People don't really *need* surgery, but looking good makes people treat you better.

So you don't think there are disproportionate appearance pressures for the genders?

I do think women gain higher social status from their appearance than men do, yeah, tho I also think because of this that the pressure men have to be good looking (inhuman muscles, for example, in like every fucking ad ever) get washed over by discussion.
