I had a consultation for plastic surgery today! I think I carry a lil social shame from 'caring so much about my appearance.' I'm not sure I actually mind my appearance so much as it feels incredibly advantageous to be more attractive, particularly if I'm public-facing.

I’ve thought of the same thing. Unfortunately there is a stigma around plastic surgery and it people have a negative reaction when it’s revealed. I think they feel that they’ve been tricked or they just assume that the person is insecure (they see that as bad).

Right, which is probably why I feel shame about it, which comes as fear of judgement from others. But I like trying to be open about things I feel ashamed about! It's scary and kinda fun.

Well, if you are dissatisfied you should do what you like. For me you have a unique, interesting and very beautiful face. I'm not sure what I would change and you would do quite well with no changes. What were you thinking of changing?

What if it just shifts the distribution toward people who like a particular kind of face?

This is really interesting. I’ve had similar thoughts with other signalling behaviour. Have you made any attempt to quantify the returns you expect?

when I was thinking of cutting my hair (and beard) for the first time in 16 years, I did a 40 day meditation series. 31 minutes a day, to see if I was really centered in the decision.

Love that you’re talking openly about this. It’s interesting to me where people draw the line. Typically nobody bats an eyelid at dental work

I think a line certainly does need to be drawn somewhere. Otherwise it’ll quickly become a rat race over who can hack up their face most effectively. In the US, most don’t have that sort of disposable income. This will end up contributing to even more inequality.
