What norm, habit, type of person, or 'common' experience that you consciously agree exists, there's evidence that it does and other people say it does, but you've never actually seen it happen yourself? Bonus points if deep down your gut just doesn't believe it.

...racism? I don't think I've ever seen anybody being racist, minus my parents.

Along these lines, walking down İstiklal street in Istanbul alone as a woman is Not Fun™, apparently. Every women I've asked confirms this but I'll never see it first-hand.

tbf i felt really good walking alone *during the daytime*. When I was walking home at 1am I slowly realized that I was the only woman on the street. The feeling i had on the street changed drastically depending on the time of day.

Oh shit, I'm glad it turned out okay! This is crazy to me, I lived on İstiklal and did this all the time, even while drunk at 3am, and never felt unsafe. But I've also heard so many of these stories that there's no way they're all untrue.

im kinda with you in general, like I tend to act like everything is fine and walk alone in crazy locations (which is how i ended up on istiklal at 1 am) because I almost never feel in danger. this one was definitely the exception and the scariest place i've been so far
