I'd argue that most racists aren't actually racist, they're culture-ist, it's just that race happens to correlate with culture a lot and gets used as a proxy.

I feel like people are interpreting this tweet as saying people are doing something 'less bad' than racism. To be clear, viewing this through a 'culturist' lens doesn't seem any less bad to me.

I think the 'badness' of the racist/culturist thing is up for debate (the words can cover a wiiide range of behaviors that are definitely not all equal), I was just saying they're roughly equivalent in however bad they are.
A racist is someone who has tightly woven beliefs about human groups (clustered by whatever current heuristic), into their identity. This is problematic since it tends overwhelming, to self-serving & effectively fixes beliefs into immutability hence imperviousness to reason
