I'd argue that most racists aren't actually racist, they're culture-ist, it's just that race happens to correlate with culture a lot and gets used as a proxy.

I feel like people are interpreting this tweet as saying people are doing something 'less bad' than racism. To be clear, viewing this through a 'culturist' lens doesn't seem any less bad to me.

It'll reliably seem less bad to others due to the overwhelming negative associations with 'racist' and the utter lack of same with 'culturist.' So, there's a sense in which promoting the term 'culturist' minimizes the apparent badness racism. However, I do agree with you.

I think one can criticize aspects of a culture without criticizing the people who were brought up in the culture. Criticizing the aesthetic aspects of a culture is silly and potentially hateful, but the values of a culture should be open to (constructive & thoughtful) critiques.

That's an interesting reaction. I think people get emotionally attached to a word and equate it to a feeling. So racist = bad. So then if it's NOT racist then it's not bad. Lost is the possibility that different things can have the same qualities.
