I would pay out the nose for a nail salon where you didn't talk to the nail person, or even better yet there was a screen hanging between you. They are lovely but I hate having to make small talk so much that I just never get my nails done.

I don't think they do consciously. I do think that the appearance of nails has minor impacts on your impression of the person overall - it's signaling!
