Just me or is philosophy actually a complete shitshow? When I was younger I really wanted to major in philosophy because I thought it was "learning to think real good about abstract stuff", but eventually found out it was "quoting other famous people's stuff at each other"

Thing is if you could pull philosophy purely out of your arse it'd be impossible to assess in university. Once you get to the advanced shit it's less about quoting famous philosophers and more about building solid arguments and admitting who helped you build them.

In any other field, you likely wouldn't have a problem with quoting "The Greats" so why is it a stickler here? Serious question.
-
Which fields? When people ask me about maths or physics, I don't go "As Maxwell said, *something about electromagnetism in 1800s terms*", I just try to explain what I know going for mental pictures/intuitions or formalism depending on the other's mathematical sophistication

Hate to be that nitpicky philosophical nerd, but philosophy is doing absolutely fine. Academic philosophy on the other hand is a shitshow.

I confess to doing a bit of namedropping myself sometimes but I do try to speak “normally” here’s some of my writing: https://thepointmag.com/author/acallard/ … and I’m speaking at UC Berkeley soon LMK if you want details you’re welcome to come.

What if all of our ideas are completely unoriginal but we just pass them off as our own?

This is consistent with my experience. There is a redeeming quality: sometimes I'll be describing a certain mode of thinking, opinion, interpretation, etc., and the philosopher will say "oh, that's called XYZ" or "oh, that's XYZism". Knowing a thing has been named can be helpful.

You can study philo and not name drop. It's considered good practice to be intelligeble. That being said, 70% of philo majors are there for law school. 20% are there to seem smart (name droppers). 10% are there out of wonder. Hang with that 10%.
