We often like to frame our ideas as subversive or 'hated by society' - but how do we tell? My favorite test is, "can your idea be used to sell a product?" If advertisers would use your concept or advertise alongside it, then your idea isn't subversive.

Advertisements are rarely contentious to their target demographic, but occasionally ads are contentious to people outside the target demographic. There exceptions however.
-
The Gillette toxic masculinity ad for example was highly contentious within the male demographic and it flopped. Sometimes advertisers try to tread closely along the lines of respectability in order to be hip or to get people talking about the brand.

So... what? What are you talking about? I'm not saying that as like a mere put down, I mean your chain of thought is not followable.
