We often like to frame our ideas as subversive or 'hated by society' - but how do we tell? My favorite test is, "can your idea be used to sell a product?" If advertisers would use your concept or advertise alongside it, then your idea isn't subversive.

This is actually not 100% true, though your test holds up. There's a lot of activist pressure in advertising to push certain things, especially multicultural/multiracial themes. Unless you think multiracial models/mixed families move more product. Data?

When I am in the foreign country I always try to watch some of their TV channels (usually the hotels carry the TV channels from the neighboring countries too). And this is what I learned: South Asian women would kill for a white complexion There are only men in Saudi soaps..etc.

Not true. We've seen a lot of commercials in the 21st century that were not motivated by raw money. Commercials, an economy whose only purpose was to make money would have never produced that way. Commercials that weren't just produced to sell a product.
