My parents always told me Santa was fake. "All the other parents lie to their kids", they said. "We'd never lie to you." So whenever I met a kid who believed in Santa, I saw them as victims of deceptive parents, and felt grateful for my parents. Effective technique, mom and dad!

I wonder whether consciously never lying might ultimately drive more self-deception. Maybe good introspection lives in the emotional saftey of privacy, rather than in realm of social judgement.
