Raising the bar on the kinds of standards people are allowed to have for their own life makes it really hard for people who'd otherwise have an optimal life with less consumerism, and leads to them requiring jobs that pay more money.

Cultural differences on things like when you "ought" to have your own place, or how much space is "liveable" makes this starkly apparent. I've often tried compromising on these things to make sounder financial decisions and it was always a sense of shame that bothered me the most

Agreed - It is possible to live well on very little. But that equation changes when procreation is considered. Also, financial stability (the confidence that you can meet your long term needs in a manner that is acceptable to your soul) is a big requirement for contentment.

The idea that everyone should be able to afford a two bedroom apartment on minimum wage is insane to me. Get roommates. Live within your means. It's not that hard.
