One insidious norm is "standard of living." You have to be able to live alone and in a big enough space, and buy enough physical goods, otherwise we consider it intolerable. But it's possible to be really happy on very little money, or in a tiny house, or dumpster diving.

Raising the bar on the kinds of standards people are allowed to have for their own life makes it really hard for people who'd otherwise have an optimal life with less consumerism, and leads to them requiring jobs that pay more money.

Agreed - It is possible to live well on very little. But that equation changes when procreation is considered. Also, financial stability (the confidence that you can meet your long term needs in a manner that is acceptable to your soul) is a big requirement for contentment.

The thing is minimal living space by yourself isn't too much of a problem, but if you want to entertain other people like friends or a potential partner in that space they would think less of you.
