Historical texts seem to have way more words like frenzy, madness, excite, wild, often in reference to individuals (not always crowds). I'm not sure what a parallel for this feeling would be in this culture. When do individual people show wild frenzy aside from mental illness?

The Iliad was mind blowing the first time I read it. Traditionally masculine figures going through the entire spectrum of joy-despondency regularly.

or maybe what was then considered a wild frenzy would just be slightly more-than-average excitement now?

We live in relatively mild emotional climes IRL, but you see these states on video in the form of riots, violent acts, vindictive destruction, moments of terrible grief (as in during the death of a child or loved one), etc.
These words indicate an emotional break from normalcy.
