My gut doesn't understand monogamy anymore. In movies, when the character sees their partner flirting with someone else, or even walking in on them cheating (minus the lying part), I'm confused why the character isn't loving and supportive. Getting mad seems so unrealistic.

My brain is like, "is this a soap opera? Why is this character suddenly acting in such an unbelievable way? Shoddy writing, really. He should obviously just date BOTH those girls, this whole "deciding between them thing" is a weak attempt at inserting drama"

Right, like I said, minus the lying part. But the severe reaction to cheating is way disproportional to if the issue was just the lying.
And I mean often the lying comes out of fear of telling their parent about their needs in the first place.

We could start a list: fiction where all the drama would disappear if the characters would just consider a ménage à trois.

A lot of people have trouble attracting ONE mate or lover. They may be very insecure of losing that one. I’ve gone DECADES between partners. If I manage to attract somebody, I’m keeping an eye on her.

Fear of loss ... loss of a valued relationship, loss of exclusivity, loss/fracture of self-sold narrative (delusion?).
