Why are these strangers thinking of me at all? Are they seeing me on the street? Reading about something I've done? Thinking about people in a class I fall into?

They like your hair.

Most of the time strangers only see what you show them, such as your tweets, clothes etc. However, friends are exposed to deeper and more aspects of your life, such as your social interactions, your thoughts etc. This creates a more complex web inside you friends’ mind about you
-
And with a friend, your history and emotional attachment can affect how they view you. For example, you may have done them wrong in the past without knowing and this can form a basis of their perception of you. With a stranger this is not the case

concretely? it’s just a fact that most strangers know nothing of me at all. the vast majority of strangers in the universe don’t even know our planet exists, probably.
-
(And that means that *I* know what they know of me pretty solidly—nothing.)

Friends will lie to you to preserve the relationship; strangers won’t, because there is no relationship to preserve.
