Sometimes google fails me. Art weirdos: I wanna make an art piece item out of probably clay? I want it to be very detailed and easily manipulable when forming, but also dry lightweight and not easily broken. Is clay the thing I want to use here? Are there other options?

I'd start with test pieces in polymer clay. If you need more strength, consider either reinforcement or clay -> mold -> cast resin of some sort, possibly with reinforcement or filler. (Not an artist, but have some experience with resin casting / plastics work.)

Cast resin? I know basics around creating molds out of clay, but I'm curious about how resin works with that. Isn't it particularly heavy? Is it typically transparent?

It's a mask; doesn't have to be durable for stuff like heavy partying, but ideally not incredibly uncomfortable or weighty. Should cover most of the face and extend a few inches past the hairline. Paintable yes pls Doesn't need to be bendable but can be

Try Sculpey. It's easy, cheap, pliable, and you can pop it in the oven to set it. Later you can paint it. I use it for Xmas ornaments (I made a gold poop emoji last time)

Many cosplayers use a product called “worbla” to make masks and costume parts, it is light weight takes detail well and can be formed with a hair dryer or heat gun.
