I don't think banning guns in the US is realistic - especially considering the sheer number of guns. There's more guns than people, with nearly 400 million guns in civilian possession, with almost all of them unregistered. It's so deeply baked into our culture.

I'm interested in options to reduce mass violence that don't go down the gun elimination road, because those are more likely to happen (and thus save lives). Stuff like mental health treatment, figuring out how to keep guns away from dangerous people, or allowing greater defense.

In US, gun homicides are negatively correlated with gun ownership; as in, states with higher gun ownership actually have slightly *fewer* gun homicides than states with lower gun ownership. Idk exactly what this means, but it backs my intuition that banning guns isn't the answer.

It’s a systemic issue, mass shootings are a symptom of how dehumanized the systems we are in have made us. Socialism will help. It ensures that there is a standard of living that no one falls below. It's more collaboration & less competition (thus more purpose, less alienation).

The shootings are a direct result of toxic capitalism that puts profits over people, individuates us, forces us to compete for scarce resources, makes us paranoid, xenophobic, sexist & racist. Capitalism breeds desperation & people do some wild shit when they’re desperate.

It means there is often more training knowledge and upbringing in states with more guns. They also know chances are you are less likely to use a gun on someone when they have a gun.

> gun homicides are negatively correlated with gun ownership That's surprising, could you share a link? I tried looking it up but Wikipedia says things like "Nearly all studies have found a positive association between gun ownership and gun-related homicide and suicide rates."

Need to differentiate between “gun violence” in general and “mass shootings”. Both are very different problems with likely different solutions. I assume we’re talking about the mass shootings here?
