I know this is your point, but for those wondering, a sliver of a crescent moon doesn't exist in the middle of the night. The moon has to be pretty close to the sun (ie just before or after a new moon) in order to be a sliver. That only leaves dawn or dusk (or during the day)

I thought the same. But the sun can be close to the horizon in the middle of the night, if it is summer and you are close to/inside one of the polar circles. Not sure how thin a moon I have seen at middle of night here in Denmark.
